Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun Review

Characters in this Anime
I've just finished watching this anime, and I have to say this is one of the best RomComs out there. Although it focuses more on the comedy part (at least in this season), it still displays a few aspects of romance though nothing serious (yet... maybe next season?).This anime never cease to make me laugh out loud and banging my table. Anyways, let's jump straight to the review... (LIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD)

Nozaki getting ideas for his manga...

Story/Plot

The story mainly revolves around high school students, Umetarou Nozaki, who is a shoujo (young girls) manga artist; and Chiyo Sakura, who has had feelings for him since she first met him. It starts off with Sakura confessing her feelings towards Nozaki who mistakes her for a fan instead. Sakura is then invited to his house to help him with his drawings. Sakura then discovers that Nozaki is actually a renowned manga artist of a popular shoujo manga "Let's Fall In Love" under the alias Sakiko Yumeno. Along the way, they encounter other schoolmates who also helps out in the process. There are also some episodes that center around their schoolmates.

Not much happening on the romance side of things.  Just a casual teenage "crush" between Sakura and Nozaki, though Nozaki's feelings towards Sakura was never mentioned.  Each episode shows the struggles of Nozaki as an artist, such as getting ideas for a scene, introducing new characters, understanding human psychology and emotions, and of course drawing. There's also some romance between their schoolmates. That said, this type of romance is my cup of tea, so not everyone might agree with my opinion.

Comedy is the main focus of this anime (I think). Every episode will leave a smile on your face, or at least a smirk. Also, the joke/comedy are not forced and flows naturally every episode. That plus the unique and memorable characters makes this one of the best RomCom anime I've seen.

TL;DR:
This anime is a very enjoyable RomCom that focuses more on the comedy aspect, but the romance isn't neglected entirely. It's also a slice of life based on a high school environment (though the school is just used as a setting/venue). Also don't expect closure or resolution in their relationships (at least for the first season).
One of the many memorable moments!

Characters (Development/Characteristics)

Let's start with Nozaki. He's quite large for a high school student. He also does not have many close friends, except for the ones that help him with his manga. Although he makes shoujo magazines, he doesn't actually have any experience in romance/love. Therefore, he's always having struggles making up scenes and often uses his friends as reference for scenes in his manga. Nozaki can be dense sometimes, especially with Sakura's feelings.

We'll move on to Sakura. She's a petite high school girl wearing polka dot ribbons which is her trademark. She fumbled up her words when confessing towards Nozaki and ends up being his assistant instead. She's still finding out if he feels the same way towards her.

(Side Note: I won't spoil what they're relationship with Nozaki or Sakura is, so you'll just have to watch and find out)
On to the side characters, we have Mikoto Mikoshiba. He's a handsome and charming character who's popular among girls, but often gets embarrassed after saying something bold. Yuzuki Seo, who's a rude and tomboyish girl who often says anything that comes to her mind. Yu Kashima, a tall girl who is known as the 'prince' of the school for having a charming personality when talking to girls.
Masayuki Hori, who is the president of the drama club, but due to his short height, he focuses more on props then acting despite having an incredible acting talent.

TL;DR:
The characters are diverse enough to be memorable and interesting. Each character sticks true to their respective personalities. Haven't really read the manga so I couldn't tell if it stays true to the manga.

Oh, Nozaki you funny guy...

Sound, Art, Animation

KIMI JANAKYA DAME MITAI~
The opening song is catchy and has a funky vibe to it. The ending song is a bit softer and pleasant to hear. The voice actors/actresses did amazingly expressing their characters and fits well with them. The artstyle is good. Not a whole lot of fanservice that I noticed, except maybe a beach scene in the OVAs. The animation is solid and looks natural. I'd say this is a high quality anime and a lot of effort has been put into this.

Why I Like This Anime

It's funny, it's cheeky, it realizes what kind of anime it's supposed to be. The comedy side of it is perfect and every episode just makes my day. The romance side of it isn't focused on therefore it just stays with the "high school crush" romance, though I would like to see their relationship expand into something more. I experienced what it's like to be a manga artist. The characters provide great reference for me in becoming an illustrator. One day... Just you wait. :P

I've read an article that this anime is doing really well, so here's hoping that a 2nd season is in the works...
And this marks the end of my review
